Morning Friends,
When I set out to build Kanahoma in 2020, I knew there was an opportunity to build a better agency for education.
Today, I’m excited to announce that we’re moving another step closer to that vision with the launch of Kanahoma Productions, one of the industry’s first — and only — education-specific production companies.
Why Start Our Own Production Company?
For those of you who have followed my career, you know I’ve been passionate about the production space for the better part of my 15 years in edu.
Whether it was coming up as a videographer at UCLA, launching (and selling) Higher Ed Live, producing dozens of TV commercials for SNHU, or leading a team that won multiple Emmys at National University, great and engaging storytelling has always been at the heart of the work that I love the most.
And what I’ve learned over the course of my career is that in an increasingly crowded market, creative is increasingly important. Creative is the last mile of great marketing making it to market, so who you choose to produce your work matters more now than ever.
But despite this reality, many organizations (both in-house and agency) outsource this last mile of creative to organizations with little to no education-specific experience; old-school production companies that rely on a bloated, bureaucratic, and restrictive business model that can often hurt more than it helps.
So that’s why we set out to build Kanahoma Productions, a better production company for education.
Here’s How We’re Different
We Don’t Just Shoot Commercials, We Produce Content Libraries
These days marketing needs more than a single 30-second spot. That’s why we’ve combined photography with videography and approach our shoots as an opportunity to produce an asset library on behalf of your organization.
We’re talking dozens of hours of footage and thousands of images, shot in a wide variety of formats and styles, all logged, tagged, and organized, so your team has what they need to produce great work all year long. Our All-Access Approach to Production
We’re proud to offer an all-access approach to production.
What does that mean for you? It means you own 100% of everything we shoot.
Every second, every shot, every working file.
At the end of our work together, we’ll share it all, so your in-house team can pick right up where we leave off.Full-Service Student & Alumni Casting Solution
We’ve designed Kanahoma Productions to stitch in perfectly with our recently-launched Kanahoma Casting, a full-service casting solution designed to source and celebrate your best student and alumni stories.
From sourcing the stories to telling them on camera, our talented team of creatives brings their expertise to bear for organizations looking to elevate authenticity and celebrate their community on screen.Industry Expertise & the Curation of Top Talent
Finally, I’m excited to share that I’m partnering with my long-time friend and mentor Mark “Hank” Hankey, who will be joining us as Executive Producer of this new venture.I first met Hank during my time at SNHU, where we collaborated on the creation of over 30 TV commercials, and he’s been a staple in the production of just about all of my best work ever since.
Hank brings over 25 years of production experience, working on everything from music videos for Aerosmith, Lil Wayne, and Phish to producing commercials for everyone from Nike and McDonald’s to Verizon and Ford. He’s even had his work in film premiere at Sundance several times.
Over the years, Hank and I have consistently found ways to curate teams of top talent, bringing together world-class Directors, Directors of Photography, Editors, and more, to ensure the work we produce isn’t just effective but elevated, exciting, and exactly what your organization needs to stand out and get ahead.
Putting It Into Perspective
As Kanahoma continues to grow, I’m excited to continue to reinvest in our offerings, expanding our team and our opportunity for impact.
In the case of Kanahoma Productions, I truly believe we have something special here.
The reality is our industry is changing, and it’s time we change the way we approach production too.
If you’re interested in learning more about Kanahoma Productions, or would like to connect about an upcoming project or need, please don’t hesitate to contact us, as I’d welcome the chance to chat.
Editor’s Note
Much of the education industry will be descending on San Diego next week for the annual ASU+GSV conference. If that includes you, and you’d like to catchup for a few minutes while there, let me know! Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. - Seth
