In an increasingly crowded market, creative is increasingly important.
Before we can stand out, we must be seen.
And the truth is, that’s harder today than it’s ever been before.
The average consumer sees over 10,000 ads per day.
The average Facebook user scrolls over 300 feet of newsfeed daily.
So while it’s easy for us to get caught up debating details of our product descriptions, or noodling on the nuances of our latest ad creative, the truth is…
The vast majority of people we are trying to reach don’t even realize we are trying to reach them.
And while the problem has never been more real, the reality has been at the heart of one of advertising’s greatest challenges forever.
The late, great ad man William Bernbach said it best when he quipped:
“The truth isn’t the truth until people believe you, and they can’t believe you if they don’t know what you’re saying, and they can’t know what you’re saying if they don’t listen to you, and they won’t listen to you if you’re not interesting, and you won’t be interesting unless you say things imaginatively, originally, freshly.”
A Call To Be Heard
So for all the time and attention we make for marketing, it may just be time to step back and find a way to foster and celebrate great creative.
Because it’s not just about what we say, but about how we say it.
It’s not just about what people hear, it’s about how we make them feel.
Standing out starts with having something to stand for.
And we won’t get noticed if we’re lost in the noise.
So let’s commit to creativity; to celebrating the art of standing out.
